The Peterborough Bhat Sikh Association (PBSA) are a small non profit charity, RN-1089403, which was formed on 24th October 2001.
Our Story
In 1974, the local Sikh community acquired 186 Cromwell Road. As the Peterborough Sikh community grew, we also acquired 184 Cromwell Road and converted the two properties into one Temple, using them for our worship for several years, until the time came when we had overgrown the properties. As the local families grew and with other Sikh families moving into Peterborough too, the size and the car parking in the congested area was becoming a major issue. Hence, PBSA was formed and we started with our mission to find an alternative site that we could move into to allow our community to continue to grow.
Moving to our existing premises at 23 Royce Road in Fengate. We had several issues regarding planning permission to use the building as a place of worship as the building was in a commercial area and had a restrictive covenant stipulating what uses the site could be for. Despite all these factors, we were eventually granted permission to convert the old tyre changing factory to our new Gurdwara Sahib May 2003, which is now called Gurdwara Baba Budha Sahib Ji.
We, the PBSA, operate under the umbrella of the Baba Budha Ji Educational Trust (BBJET) and our aim is to provide and improve the existing building to be more eco friendly and to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible, for the benefit of the local and wider community. Whereas BBJET runs the day to day duties of the Temple with the President and the Executive Committee, PBSA is currently working with the other Sikh Temple, Gurdwara Singh Sahba also in Fengate, and together we are providing several projects such as tree planting at Nene Park, football for young children, Kirtan (singing the praises of god) and Punjabi language classes, boxing and Gatka (traditional Sikh martial arts), and will shortly be providing archery lessons too. We have trained and qualified officials to run these events which have all been sponsored by the Temples.
